Research to investigate the causes and prevalence of prescribing errors in general practice Details (Hits : 201)

Last updated - 07 December 2009
Aims: The GMC protects, promotes and maintains the health and safety of the public by ensuring proper standards in the practice of medicine and promoting high standards in medical education. Our responsibility for patient safety means that we have an interest in reducing prescribing error rates that can endanger patient safety and have serious adverse consequences. This research would aim to provide evidence and recommendations to inform developments in the exercise of our functions. In particular it should help the GMC to: put patient safety first; support and develop the good medical practice of doctors; promote fairness and equality and value diversity.
Description: Previously commissioned research suggests that prescription errors are made by all levels of medical practitioner and that changes in undergraduate medical education alone will not reduce error rates. This research also identified clinical governance arrangements and the structure and functionality of the multi-disciplinary team as providing significant protection against errors in a hospital setting. This project would seek to identify informal or formal safeguards, as well as cultural and practice behaviours that are unique to general practice and may contribute to error rates.
