| Aims: | The scheme supports the development of healthcare scientist research capacity and capability building, by providing funding to undertake research for patient benefit. |

| Description: | The Fellowships will support NHS Healthcare Scientists who already have some research experience and wish to bridge clinical or service careers and research. There are two award levels: - funding for individual doctoral level research - funding for individual postdoctoral research projects Fellowships must be undertaken with the support of the relevant NHS line-manager and an appropriate academic partner. The research proposed must be of direct relevance to the NHS with the potential to improve service or clinical outcome. Applications are invited from individuals working in England from one of the three main Healthcare Scientist disciplines: Life Sciences, Physiological Sciences, or Physical Sciences / Engineering. |

| Funding: | The award will cover: - The Fellow’s salary including the employer's contribution to National Insurance and superannuation. - A contribution to research costs (capped at £20,000 for the duration of the Fellowship). - Costs of formal courses, training and development (capped at £10,000 for the duration of the Fellowship). - Tuition Fees to undertake a PhD for doctoral level Fellows (capped at £4000 per year). - The award will not cover full economic costs. - No other funding is available. |

| Restrictions: | - All applicants for a CSO Healthcare Scientist Research Fellowship must currently hold a substantive (not honorary) employment contract with the NHS. - Applications are welcome from any Healthcare Science discipline. All applicants must also have completed their training and have voluntary or statutory registration with the Health Professions Council. - Applicants must have the support of their local work place based supervisor and NHS employer to be released to undertake the research proposed on a full time or part time basis at a site in England. - Applicants must identify an academic who is willing to support their application and provide academic supervision and input to their research training. This supervisor must have a track record of successful supervisions and recent publications. - The scheme will not usually support individuals who are currently employed in research funded posts for more than 20 % of their time. - Only one application to this Round of the CSO Healthcare Scientists Research Fellowship competition is permitted by a single individual. |
